I Am Mother (film review) *contains spoilers*

Film: I Am Mother Year: 2019 Genre: Drama, Horror, Sci-fi Directed By: Grant Sputore Starring: Rose Byrne, Maddie Lenton, Luke Hawker About:  In the wake of humanity's extinction, a teenage girl is raised by a robot designed to repopulate the earth. But their unique bond is threatened when an inexplicable stranger arrives with alarming news. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5BKctcZxrM My Review: Having had I Am Mother on my Netflix to watch list for a while, I thought it would be the perfect time to watch it. Wanting a sci-fi movie which had AI in it I thought that this would be a great choice. I soon realised that I Am Mother was a movie in which I was engrossed by even though it did have some problems within it. Showing how Mother chose an embryo to make into a child in the facility, was something which made me question why there wasn't any humans around. Watching the daughter grow up and always pass their tests, while the droid help to make sure tha...

Total Recall (film review)

Film: Total Recall Year: 2012 Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-fi Directed By: Len Wiseman Starring: Colin Farrell, Bokeem Woodbine, Bryan Cranston About:  A factory worker, Douglas Quaid, begins to suspect that he is a spy after visiting Recall - a company that provides its clients with implanted fake memories of a life they would like to have led - goes wrong and he finds himself on the run. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pV2zz3z0oM My Review: With this movie calling out to me over the last week I thought I would give in and give it a watch. Having not seen this in a couple of years I couldn't really remember it all that much which I was thankful for as it left me constantly wanting to know what was going to be happening next. Having also not seen the original in a while I am not able to compare both of the movies. I did think that having the main character Douglas lose all memories of his previous life and not really understanding why he is having dre...

Supernova (film review) *contains spoilers*

Film: Supernova Year: 2000 Genre: Horror, Sci-fi, Thriller Directed By: Walter Hill Starring: James Spader, Peter Facinelli, Robin Tunney About:  Supernova chronicles the search and rescue patrol of a medical ship in deep space in the early 22nd century and its six-member crew which includes a captain and pilot, a co-pilot, a medical officer, a medical technician, a search and rescue. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUdy0Cu3f_o My Review: Looking through my movies and wanting something based in space to watch I decided to put on Supernova which is a film in which I couldn't remember at all. Not remembering it made me feel like this was a new movie to me and I did keep me watching all of the way through easily. I like that this film showed how the device in which they discover is able to make people stronger and able to make them younger as well. By also having this device able to reattach body parts it makes the audience worried about how they will get ...

Time Travel - Roxanne San Jose (book review)

Book: Time Travel Author: Roxanne San Jose Genre: Sci-fi Published By: Avid Publishing LLC Published Year: 2019 My Review: Being given a free copy of Time Travel for an honest review I decided to give this a read. Having thought it sounded interesting I was looking forward to seeing how this book would go forward and although this book had some good ideas I don't feel like this book was fully finished. Time Travel is about a girl who invents a time machine and when coming home from the future finds that her boyfriend has went to the past and gotten himself stuck there so tries to get him back while making friends along the way. I liked that this book had that when the couple went to the future and came across a robot went on an adventure with it after knowing it had been abandoned for a long time. Not only this but by having the main girl character Angelie come back for the robot when her boyfriend goes missing and asks for his help was really sweet and really helped ...

Illuminae - Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff (book review)

Book: Illuminae Author: Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff Genre: Sci-fi, Young Adult, Romance Published By: Knopf Books for Young Readers Published Year: 2015 My Review: Having heard a lot of positive things about this book I thought I would check it out and borrowed it from the library and found it was a really quick read and rather unique in the way that it was written. Illuminae is about survivors from a war trying to get to safety however there is a plague in which is getting throughout the passengers and is driving them crazy. Not only this but it seems like the main computer system has also went insane and has stopped trying to protect the people like it is supposed to to. I thought that this book was original in it's story as well as the way that it was written and some of the pages with the imagery was really well done and also made to be really pretty. This did keep me wanting to see how the pages would look and with it's unique style I thought it was well ...

Spider-Man: Far From Home (film review) *contains spoilers*

Film: Spider-Man: Far From Home Year: 2019 Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-fi Directed By: Jon Watts Starring: Tom Holland, Samuel L. Jackson, Jake Gyllenhaal About:  Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man must step up to take on new threats in a world that has changed forever. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nt9L1jCKGnE My Review: Being excited that there was a Spider-man movie coming out I needed to see it as soon as I could however this film left me feeling kinda disappointed at the end of the film which did upset me and I feel like they rushed over some parts and made other parts just a little too slow for me personally. I did like that this film showed what happened to everyone since the Blip which happened in the Avengers movies and that even though some people aged the ones who came back were the same age and had to continue life as they had before. This helped to explain what happened with everyone after the events of Endgame and sh...

Dark Phoenix (film review)

Film: Dark Phoenix Year: 2019 Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-fi Directed By: Simon Kinberg Starring: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence About:  Jean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn her into a Dark Phoenix. Now the X-Men will have to decide if the life of a team member is worth more than all the people living in the world. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-q8C_c-nlM My Review: Having been an X-Men fan for most of my life I was excited to see that Dark Phoenix was coming out and decided to go to the cinema to see it on the first opportunity that I had. Although this is a decent watch this is nothing like what I expected it to be and it really let me down. I thought that this movie was good in showing how Phoenix had dangerous powers and that Jean had no control over them which led to her hurting the ones that she loved. Realising this she did try to get help from anyone who she thought would be able to help he...

Film: The Girl With All The Gifts Year: 2016 Genre: Drama, Horror, Sci-fi Directed By: Colm McCarthy Starring: Sennia Nanua, Fisayo Akinade, Dominique Tipper About:  A scientist and a teacher living in a dystopian future embark on a journey of survival with a special young girl named Melanie. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjGkB_oWTe0 My Review: Having been interested in this movie for a while and it really catching my eye lately especially with it being on Netflix I couldn't resist but to give this a watch. This is something in which I had better expectations for than it gave me and seemed a rather forgettable movie even though it wasn't a bad watch. I liked that The Girl With All The Gifts started with showing how the children were taught and kept in separate rooms however made the audience wonder why they were kept that way when they seemed like normal children. Later discovering that they were zombies and that there was a zombie break all over the ...

As a result I thought I would re-watch Snowpiercer and give it a review which is fun for me as it is a film in which I really enjoy and feel is very underrated. I love how this film begins by showing you how the passengers who are on the train that goes around the world are the only survivors of the human race. By doing t...

Film: Venom Year: 2018 Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller Directed By: Ruben Fleischer Starring: Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed About:  A failed reporter is bonded to an alien entity, one of many symbiotes who have invaded Earth. But the being takes a liking to Earth and decides to protect it. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9Mv98Gr5pY My Review: Having wanted to see Venom in the cinema however not having got around to it and having owned the movie since it was released physically however not feeling like watching this for a while. This movie grabbed my attention again and I couldn't wait to watch it and cast my own views on a movie which I heard no negative feedback upon. Personally, I really enjoyed how the film showed how after the Venom was discovered how scientists experimented on it to see how it took over bodies for hosts and why they did this. Not only this but even taking it into animals before human testing, this was something in which ...

Augur of Shadows - Jacob Rundle (book review)

Book: Augur of Shadows Author: Jacob Rundle Genre: Adventure, Fantasy, Sci-fi Published By: N/A Published Year: 2019 My Review: Having received a free copy of this book as an ARC for Silver Dagger Tours I was glad to be able to be a part of the tour as the novel seemed very interesting to me and had a great premise about it. With the book being a young adult, apocalyptic novel. Augur of Shadows is about a boy named Henri and his friends Simeon and Etlina who need to stop the Old Ones from coming to Earth and destroying the world and putting it into complete darkness. In order to do this Henri must use his magic in order to bring the apocalypse and help reset the world. I found that this book had a good story and that it was a very easy book to read, which did make me want to continuously find out more about how the children's adventures would progress. By also seeing how Henri comes to terms with his powers was something in which I thought was great for the reader as ...

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (film review) *contains spoilers*

Film: Rise of the Planet of the Apes Year: 2011 Genre: Action, Drama, Sci-fi Directed By: Rupert Wyatt Starring: James Franco, Andy Serkis, Freida Pinto About:  A substance designed to help the brain repair itself gives advanced intelligence to a chimpanzee who leads an ape uprising. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28Z_D9Grh18 My Review: Having owned the trilogy on DVD for a while however never having seen any of them I thought it would be a good idea to start with the first movie. Not knowing if I would like this or not I thought I was worried about this however I really shouldn't have been as it was a lot better than I had expected it to be. This film is a brilliant way of starting a trilogy with finding out how Caesar was born and how he was more intelligent because his mother had the drug in her when he was born so it was transferred over to him. Seeing how Caesar was also with the doctor in which was told initially to kill him and how he became par...

Pacific Rim: Uprising (film review) *contains spoilers*

Film: Pacific Rim: Uprising Year: 2018 Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-fi Directed By: Steven S. DeKnight Starring: John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny About:  Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, reunites with Mako Mori to lead a new generation of Jaeger pilots, including rival Lambert and 15-year-old hacker Amara, against a new Kaiju threat. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BAhwgjMvnM My Review: Having seen and enjoyed the first Pacific Rim movie I thought I would give the second one a watch for the first time. I thought that it was good how they showed that a teenager was able to build a Jaeger by herself just by being a junker and one that works really well. By doing this even though she was so young it helped to highlight how talented she was and that she was a good pilot for them as well. I did think the small one in which she made was also pretty cool with what it was able to operate. Showing how Jake also didn't want to be a Jaeger pil...

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (film review) *contains spoilers*

Film: Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Year: 2018 Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-fi Directed By: J.A. Bayona Starring: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rafe Spall About:  When the island's dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen and Claire mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vn9mMeWcgoM My Review: Having not seen the second in the Jurassic World series, I thought this would be a perfect time for me to give it a watch especially after really enjoying the first one. I thought that this movie was really good and I liked how it was set years after the destruction of the park in the first movie. By doing this it kept the timeline on track but also made the audience care more for the dinosaurs and the danger in which they are in due to already being introduced in the previous movie, especially Blue! By having people come and abduct Blue in order to use her to create a weapon f...

Glass (film review) *contains spoilers*

Film: Glass Year: 2019 Genre: Drama, Sci-fi, Thriller Directed By: M. Night Shyamalan Starring: James McAvoy, Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson About:  Security guard David Dunn uses his supernatural abilities to track Kevin Wendell Crumb, a disturbed man who has twenty-four personalities Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95ghQs5AmNk&t=11s My Review: Having seen the other two movies in the trilogy which consists of Unbreakable and Split, I could not resist but to see Glass the first chance I got and I was not disappointed! This movie carries on from the ending of Split perfectly in which the beast is still around and killing people but this time with the difference of David trying to stop him. While trying however they end up in a psych ward and I liked that they done this as it kept the movie more to the real world in which they were hoping for. Having it so that someone would try to help them get better and stop delusions of being a super hero when t...

Bird Box (film review) *contains spoilers*

Film: Bird Box Year: 2018 Genre: Drama, Horror, Sci-fi Directed By: Susanne Bier Starring: Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes, John Malkovich About:  Five years after an ominous unseen presence drives most of society to suicide, a mother and her two children make a desperate bid to reach safety. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INJ2bPFy108 My Review: Having wanted to see this from the moment I saw the first trailer a couple of months ago I was glad to realise that Netflix had released it and thought that this would be a good film to watch with my mother. I am very glad I did watch this as although it left some questions to be answered I ended up liking this film a lot more than I thought I was going to. Having the movie start with urgency and telling children not to take their blindfolds off I thought was a great way of starting the movie as it started rather fast and made the watcher from the very beginning wonder what was going on and why they were to kee...

The Purge: Election Year (film review) *contains spoilers*

Film: The Purge: Election Year Year: 2016 Genre: Action, Horror, Sci-fi Directed By: James DeMonaco Starring: Frank Grillo, Elizabeth Mitchell, Mykelti Williamson About:  Former Police Sergeant Barnes becomes head of security for Senator Charlie Roan, a Presidential candidate targeted for death on Purge night due to her vow to eliminate the Purge. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rqIJcY9hMc My Review: Having seen the first two in the Purge series and it coming ever closer to Halloween I thought that it would be good to watch The Purge: Election Year . I thought that this film was good as it showed at the very beginning why the Senator wanted to get rid of the Purge and that on the lead up the annual Purge made it legal for everyone to become a target including the government and the New Founding Fathers which created the annual Purge. I liked that this film although not being as scary as the first two movies showed a story and how some people are still ...

The Titan (film review) *contains spoilers*

Film: The Titan Year: 2018 Genre: Sci-Fi, Thriller Directed By: Lennart Ruff Starring: Sam Worthington, Taylor Schilling, Tom Wilkinson About:  A military family takes part in a ground-breaking experiment of genetic evolution and space exploration. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctM8zpe3BHo My Review: Seeing The Titan on Netflix I thought that I would check it out as it was a sci-fi/thriller and new to 2018. This film was how I expected it to be and I was rather glad to have watched it. The Titan is about a group of people who go through experiments in order to lower their oxygen levels and get them ready to go to the planet Titan in order to see if there is a chance that the human race could live outside of Earth. However the experiment is not what it seems. I thought that this film was rather interesting and showed how to enhance human evolution in order to better the human race but also showed the side effects and how dangerous that it can be. By ...
