Whispers Underground Ben Aaronovitch (book review) *contains spoilers*

Book: Whispers Underground Author: Ben Aaronovitch Genre: Crime, Fantasy, Mystery Published By: Gollancz Published Year: 2012 My Review: Continuing with the Peter Grant series I couldn't wait to start the third book. With the ending of the second book being so surprising and showing how there was an evil warlock who was also being in London it really made me hope that they would reveal more about them and wonder how Nightingale didn't know about them prior. Hoping for more answers this book excited me and had me looking forward to what was going to happen next. Ben Aaronovitch seems to have become his own in his writing of this novel, with the character developments and feeling that his writing is becoming a lot easier to read than the previous books in this series. With the writing seeming to get better I found that this book was one in which really hooked me from the beginning and already part of the story and one with the characters. A thing thing in which I enjo...

Total Recall (film review)

Film: Total Recall Year: 2012 Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-fi Directed By: Len Wiseman Starring: Colin Farrell, Bokeem Woodbine, Bryan Cranston About:  A factory worker, Douglas Quaid, begins to suspect that he is a spy after visiting Recall - a company that provides its clients with implanted fake memories of a life they would like to have led - goes wrong and he finds himself on the run. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pV2zz3z0oM My Review: With this movie calling out to me over the last week I thought I would give in and give it a watch. Having not seen this in a couple of years I couldn't really remember it all that much which I was thankful for as it left me constantly wanting to know what was going to be happening next. Having also not seen the original in a while I am not able to compare both of the movies. I did think that having the main character Douglas lose all memories of his previous life and not really understanding why he is having dre...

Wreck-It Ralph (film review)

Film: Wreck-It Ralph Year: 2012 Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy Directed By: Rich Moore Starring: John C. Reilly, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch About:  A video game villain wants to be a hero and sets out to fulfill his dream, but his quest brings havoc to the whole arcade where he lives. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87E6N7ToCxs My Review: Being one of my favourite Disney movies and having not seen the second movie yet I thought it would be a good idea to watch the first one and get reacquainted with the characters and the story in which I enjoy so much. This is a film in which I always look forward to watching and that I like the concept of as well. I love that Wreck-It Ralph shows the movie from a bad guys perspective who just wants to be accepted for who he is but because of his job people don't respect him. Having him want to get a medal to change this and gain the respect of those around him I think is really sad and shows how he does not feel li...

Mirror Mirror (film review) *contains spoilers*

Film: Mirror Mirror Year: 2012 Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Drama Directed By: Tarsem Singh Starring: Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer About:  An evil queen steals control of a kingdom and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILDeA7AqA84 My Review: Having not seen Mirror Mirror in a while I thought it would be a good way to start the week and a film, by also wanting something that was easy watching I thought that this would be the perfect movie for me and I was right. I like that this movie is not the same as every other Snow White film which has been released however stays true to the overall story. By having Snow White still hated by her step-mother as she is the fairest of them all and the rightful queen to the throne and still tries to kill her. Having through the movie the way that the queen is able to use magic and how the magic mirror is able to reflect w...

Tad: The Lost Explorer (film review)

I thought that this movie was good at showing children never to give up on your dreams and just because it doesn't feel like they are going anywhere doesn't mean you should stop fighting for them. I thought by also showing that people should take opportunities that goes there way that this was a good thing for both adults and children in showing that they need to always aim high and do what makes them happ...

Brave (film review)

Film: Brave Year: 2012 Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy Directed By: Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman Starring: Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson About:  Determined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CKcqIahedc My Review: Having not seen Brave in years I thought it would be a perfect movie to watch which would make me feel proud as a Scottish person while watching an animation movie. I really like that this movie has clans which is something that is a huge part of Scotland's past and by having really common Scottish names it gave it more of a Scottish feel to the movie. Having a lead character in which doesn't want to be married off and wants to be her own person I think is a really key thing for people to watch and for children to know that it is okay ...

The Fault In Our Stars - John Green (book review)

Book: The Fault In Our Stars Author: John Green Genre:  Young Adult Fiction Published By: Penguin Published year: 2012 My Review:  Having seen the film before and always told to read the book I caved and decided to read it and I was not disappointed. Having been unable to put this book down since I started I managed to read this book in under 7 hours! The Fault In Our Stars is about a girl called Hazel who has cancer however when she meets a boy at a cancer support group called Augustus she falls in love, while struggling with her cancer and worrying about him becoming too close to her. I loved this book and it made me laugh at times and get a lump in my throat as well as sad. This book is a great romance with the twist of cancer between two teenagers who fall in love even though they know their time together is limiting however does not stop them from doing as much as they can. I feel that I have maybe seen the film too many times however as I always knew what wa...
