Circle (film review)

Film: Circle Year: 2015 Genre: Drama, Horror, Mystery Directed By: Aaron Hann, Mario Miscione Starring: Allegra Masters, Aimee McKay, Ashley Key About:  Held captive and faced with their imminent executions, fifty strangers are forced to choose the one person among them who deserves to live. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAlpm2oRzy8 My Review: Having not watched this movie in a while and wanting to watch it all day, I caved and put this on through Netflix. Personally, I like horror movies that have a psychological twist such as this film about right and wrong. I have seen this film before and I wouldn't say that it is amazing but it is a good watch.  I liked how Circle  had a lot of different characters and that the viewer got to see the movie from everyone's perspective not just one or two characters while also leaving the questions "why are they there?" and "what is the purpose of the circle?" which left me hoping for more answers as the film w...

Illuminae - Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff (book review)

Book: Illuminae Author: Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff Genre: Sci-fi, Young Adult, Romance Published By: Knopf Books for Young Readers Published Year: 2015 My Review: Having heard a lot of positive things about this book I thought I would check it out and borrowed it from the library and found it was a really quick read and rather unique in the way that it was written. Illuminae is about survivors from a war trying to get to safety however there is a plague in which is getting throughout the passengers and is driving them crazy. Not only this but it seems like the main computer system has also went insane and has stopped trying to protect the people like it is supposed to to. I thought that this book was original in it's story as well as the way that it was written and some of the pages with the imagery was really well done and also made to be really pretty. This did keep me wanting to see how the pages would look and with it's unique style I thought it was well ...

Deceit - M.J. Haag (film review) *contains spoilers*

Book: Deceit Author: M.J. Haag Genre: Fantasy, Romance Published By: Shattered Glass Publishing LLC Published Year: 2015 My Review: Having read the first book just before picking this up I was really excited to see how things would progress for Benella and the Beast and worried about what the future holds for the family that have just moved to the water for their fathers job. Deceit comes straight after the events of the book  Depravity  and shows how Benella is now living with the Beast on his estate and wants to help him break the curse that has been put on him by the enchantress Rose. Learning that he needs to give her a night of pleasure to free him Benella tries to help him not only sexually to gain control but to also become a better man, while starting to realise that the Beast might be more than she expected. Personally, I loved how this book took place exactly as the first one ended which left no time for the reader to be confused or wondering what happe...

Depravity - M.J. Haag (book review) *contains spoilers*

Book: Depravity Author: M. J. Haag Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Retelling Published By: Shattered Glass Publishing LLC Published Year: 2015 My Review: Having got an e-mail about a book tour with Silver Dagger Book Tours about a Beauty and the Beast Retelling, I knew that I had to take part and I was not disappointed at all in doing so. This book really surprised me and I ended up enjoying it a lot more than I expected. Depravity is about a girl called Benella who when trying to help fed her family takes food from the estate just out of town comes across the beast who is willing to help her as long as she cleans his house. However, when things start going badly for Benella's family the Beast wants to keep her in his estate even though she doesn't want to lose her family as a result. I thought that this retelling of the iconic fairy tale was different from ones that I have read in the past and I liked that this showed how she wanted to help her family even though her sis...

Knowing this was a film I enjoyed the first time I seen it I had high expectations of this film and what I was expecting and I am so glad to have this film surprise me by having me enjoy it even more than previously. I love how this film starts with showing how the Boov keep running away from their enemies which I think sets the atmosphere for the movie really well. With only one of them seeming different and that being Oh I like how it shows how he is just wanting to be friends with people and makes mistakes li...

Krampus (film review) *contains spoilers*

Film: Krampus Year: 2015  Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Horror Directed By: Michael Dougherty Starring: Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner About:  A boy who has a bad Christmas ends up accidentally summoning a festive demon to his family home. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6cVyoMH4QE My Review: Thinking it would be a good idea to watch a horror/comedy film I couldn't resist but put on Krampus  which did make me laugh numerous times through it. I do like that this film acknowledges Krampus as not many movies do even though he is a part of Christmas. I also liked that this film told you how it also happened to the gran when she was a child so could understand how Krampus was taking over Christmas. With the children's wish to make his family disappear Krampus did do as he was asked to do as Santa'a evil brother as known in some ways and shadow in others. This film did make me laugh which is something I did enjoy about this movie with the ginge...

Christmas With The Coopers (film review)

Film: Christmas With The Coopers Year: 2015 Genre: Comedy, Romance Directed By: Jessie Nelson Starring: Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, John Goodman About:  The intertwined stories of four generations of Coopers unfold right before the annual family reunion on Christmas Eve Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAfBULcwCPM My Review: Letting my mum choose the movie for Christmas Eve she decided to put on Christmas With The Coopers as we had both never seen it before. This was a film in which I feel I personally wouldn't watch again however was one that is different for the Christmas period. I thought this movie was great to show how families try to please each other over the Christmas period and try and pretend everything is really happy and great even if things really are the opposite. By also showing how different family members were going through different situations I thought was a good way of making everyone who was watching able to associate themselves with...

Film: He Never Died Year: 2015 Genre: Comedy, Drama, Fantasy Directed By: Jason Krawczyk Starring: Henry Rollins, Booboo Stewart, Kate Greenhouse About:  Jack, a social outcast, is thrust out of his comfort zone when the outside world bangs on his door and he can't contain his violent past. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyWralJ2pkk My Review: Letting my mum choose the movie for us to watch she took a look on Netflix and decided to put on He Never Died . This film although sounding familiar to me I couldn't place and found myself really liking this movie. The film is about a man named Jack who seems to do nothing all day until his daughter arrives at his door and everything changes as mobsters try to kill him. However, nothing is as it seems about Jack! I thought that this was good at showing a man who feels like he has given up with the world and how he stays to himself till he is forced to do otherwise. With the addition of his daughter you cou...

I was really surprised by this film and just how much I ended up enjoying it. Jurassic World is about a genetically designed dinosaur and decides to go killing all the dinosaurs and people within the island. However, when they are not able to capture the dinosaur easily will they be able to capture it or destroy it before it destroys the island. I loved that from the very beginning of the movie it was all set for what was going to be happening throughout the film due to seeing t...

Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3agaVwt0tb8 My Review: Wanting a movie I have seen before and always enjoy I decided to go for the Ryan Reynolds movie Self/less  which I always really enjoy no matter how many times I have seen it. The movie is about a man who is dying and decides to put his mind into another body which is younger and a lot healthier however he is no longer able to talk or see anyone from his previous life and they are not to know he is still alive. Film: The Vvitch Year: 2015 Genre: Horror, Mystery Directed By: Robert Eggers Starring: Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie About:  A family in 1630s New England is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession. Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQXmlf3Sefg My Review: Having heard a lot of good things about this movie I saw that it was on Netflix and thought I would give it a watch, however I ended up disappointed by this movie. The Vvitch is about a family who moves out of England and has their baby stolen by the woods, as tensions grow the family starts to think that maybe it is the daughter who is a witch and the family is slowly being torn apart by black magic. I found that this film was not enjoyable to watch and it made me rather bored from near the beginning. Hoping that it was just a slow movie to get into I continued watching but only the last ten minutes was really all that enjoyable to me. The film had no characters...

Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVEyExrtMWE My Review: Having looked in the store Cex for some movies I saw this film and was grabbed by the cover, so without reading the back of the box I decided to buy it, bring it home and give it a watch! The film is about three people who are chosen by the crow of a shaman to go to a land that is promised to have food for them as the animals have disappeared and their people are dying. However, when the shaman turns evil and tries to kill the three young warriors will they be able to help their community or will they lose? I found that this film was a good watch and kept my interest all the way through which I was glad about and didn't find that the f...

Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XN2X72jrFk My Review: With this experiment interesting me more than any other I have heard of I found out that there was a new film based off of the experiment and could not help but to see it and how this film would tackle this experiment. The film is about The Stanford Prison Experiment where students were put into two groups one of guards and the other of prisoners and how they changed as people and how physiologically both groups of people changed. Although the experiment was meant to end after two weeks it ended after six days and this film shows what happened with...

The film is about Peter who after being picked up by Blackbeard discovers that his mother was from Neverland and as a result tries to find her. With the help of Hook, Peter helps to save the fairy kingdom and get rid of the threat of Blackbeard. I found this film really well done as a way to show who ...

Man vs Snake: The Long and Twisted Tale of Nibbler (film review)

Film: Man vs Snake: The Long and Twisted Tale of Nibbler Year: 2015 Genre:  Documentary Starring: Tim McVey, Dwayne Richard, Enrico Zanetti About:  MAN VS SNAKE tells the story of Tim McVey (the gamer not the bomber) who in 1984, on a single quarter (and over forty-four hours of non-stop play) was the first person in history to score over one billion points on a video game. My Review:  As a gamer and seeing that this was on Netflix however I had not seen it before it automatically grabbed my interest and I couldn't help but watch this for the very first time. Also as a documentary this was very different than the films that I tend to watch so thought that this would be the very different style of film for me to watch. This film is about Tim McVey who after being the first person who got a billion points back in 1984 decides to try and get back to his score over 25 years later and the challenges he has getting back to his score and showing that he is the world r...
