My Review:
Taking part in the OWL'S Readathon I needed a book which met the prompt of "Plant on the Cover" and after putting a poll on Twitter which had the choice of three different books this is the one that came out on top. As a result I ended up with this book and although seeming interested in it from the back of the book I found that this book did not grab me as much as I wish it did.
The book is about a man who's cousin dies so he goes to try and find out the truth about her death and upon getting to the village of Halfoak finds that the people are really into superstition and believed his cousin to be a fairy and not of this world. However, when his wife gets there he starts to think that maybe there is some truth in the tales the people were saying.
I found that this book was really slow for my personal taste and I couldn't really find myself getting into it that much which is unfortunate. I also found that after I had finished reading a chapter or so I could not really remember what happened and had to re-read parts of the novel which did discourage me a little as well. I found the writing style isn't the kind that I personally find easy to read which did did make me rate this book down a bit. Not only this but I found some of the language used I didn't understand which did make this harder for me to read through, not only this but the way that the people spoke in the village was hard for me to understand and I just found that I didn't really understand what they were saying for a majority of the book which was disappointing to me as I thought that the idea for the story was good and did have a lot in which I really wish I could have liked.
However, I did like the twists that were within this book and the ending which did shock me. This is a book in which I also thought had a lot of research into the past and the superstitions of fairies in order to give this book a lot of folklore. I also found that I liked the little poems and rhymes that were at the very beginning and the very end of the book and thought that it brought the book more together.
Overall, this book personally wasn't for me however I would recommend this book to those who like thrillers and those who are into slower paced books. Not only this but I would recommend this book to people who are wanting something to do with folklore of fairies in England. Personally, this isn't a book I could see myself reading again.
My Rating: 2/5
